- Maintain Antarctic Treaty; ensure peaceful uses of region
only

PRESIDENTS ANTARCTIC MEMORANDUM
5 FEBRUARY 1982
Directs Executive Branch to:
- maintain program at active and influential level to
support the range of U.S. Antarctic Interests
- conduct science and occupy South Pole and two coastal
stations year-round
- emphasize cost-effectiveness and return on investment
Directs National Science Foundation to:
- budget for and maintain entire U.S. program
- fund or support university and Federal research
- use Government logistics on cost-reimbursable basis
- use commercial support where cost-effective and in the
National Interest
Permits other agencies to fund and perform short-term
projects within NSF operational framework.
