Strophiops sula Maynard and Clapp, 1915

Strophiops sula Maynard and Clapp, 1915:180 bis = Replacement name for Strophiops obliterata Maynard, 1913; Harasewych et al., 2007:434, fig. 105.

Geographic Distribution: New Providence and Adjacent Islands, Bahama Islands.

Type Locality: Booby Rock [16 miles NE of New Providence Island, Bahamas].

Type Material: Lectotype, MCZ 76334


Maynard and Clapp (1915:191) recognized that S. obliterata Maynard, 1913 was a homonym of Strophia scripta obliterata Maynard, 1896, and proposed the replacement name Strophiops sula.  MCZ 76334 contained a single specimen labeled as the "Holotype" of S. sula.  As Strophiops obliterata Maynard, 1913 was based on 812 syntypes, this specimen was designated as the lectotype of Strophiops obliterata Maynard, 1913, and consequently [Article 72:7, ICZN, 1999:78] its replacement name, Strophiops sula Maynard and Clapp, 1915 by Harasewych et al. 2007.
