Original Description

"Cerion arangoi alcaldei subspec. nov.

            Holotypus.— Playa El Inglés, Yaguanabo, Cienfegos. Col. Oscar Alcalde. Museo Poey No. 13,164.

            Paratypus.— Idem. Col ección Sánchez Roig y Museo Poey.

            Descripción.— Este ceriónido pertenece al grupo de Cerion iostomum Pfr., por la coloración violácea del interior de la abertura, así como por su situación geográfica. Es más cercano a Cerion arangoi Pilsbry, de la bahía de Cienfuegos, primitivamente considerado como una subspecie de C. iostomum, pero bien separable por su tamaño, escultura y sistema de coloración.

            C. a. alcaldei es de concha más pequeña que la raza típicam que procede de Cayo Arenas, pues mmientras ésta alcanza más de 25 mm. de longitude, C. a. alcaldei no llega a 20 mm. en los ejemplares examinados. Por otra parte, la nueva raza muestra el perístoma mucho menos engrosado que la típica.

"Cerion arangoi alcaldei subspec. nov.

      Paratypus.— Idem. Sánchez Roig Collection and Poey Museum.

     Description.- This cerion belongs to the Cerion iostomum Pfr group because of the violet color of the inner part of the aperture as well as its geographical location. It is more similar to the Cerion arangoi Pilsbry, from Cienfuegos Bay, originally considered to be a subspecies of C. iostomum, but is well distinguished by its size, sculpture and color pattern.

     The shell of C. a. alcaldei is smaller than the typical species that comes from Cayo Arenas. While the length of Cerion arangoi reaches 25 mm, C. a. alcaldei does not reach 20 mm in the examined specimens.

     Moreover, the new species has a peristome that is much less thick than Cerion arangoi.

This species is dedicated to its discoverer, the well-known Cuban malacologist Mr Oscar Alcalde, who sent the specimens to Dr Sanchez Roig.
