Original Description

 "Pupa Milleri Pfr.

            T. profunde rimata, oblonga, solida, sculptura variabilis, sublaevigata, aut striis levibus confertissimis, rarissime plicis elevatis distantioribus sculpta, opaca, cretacea, rarius strigis parcis corneis ornata; spira sursum in conum acutiusculum tenninata; sutura levissima; anfr. 11-12plani, ultimus antice leviter ascendens, basi turgidus, subcompressus; apertura verticalis, lunato-rotundata, intus livido-carnea, dente parietali valido et columellari parvulo profundo munita; perist. crassum, productum, marginibus callo valido elevato junctis, externo reflexo, columellari perdilatato, arcuatim revoluto. Long. 31-39, diam., 11½ 13 mill.

Habitat Duck Key ,("Exuma Group") insularum Bahamensium (W. W. Miller).

(Pfeiffer, 1867:129-130.)  Malakoz. Bl. 1867. V. Juni.

Even if with this kind the Sculptur is evenly so variable, e.g. with that, cubanischen P. becomes maritima and Sagraiana, then nevertheless the specifische zusammengehoerigkeit of the different individuals by the agreeing perfect education convex zugespitzten initial cone, as by the quite constante formation of the thickened, connected and outward struck back mouth seam proved.

Of large interest some young individuals of this kind in relationship on of E. v. Martens (Malak. Bl, received at the same time. 1859. S. first internal zahnleisten in the first turns, a Beohachtung, which him on the most probable Vermuthung it led, observed 209) that Helix was likewise pentodon Mke. a young Pupa, whose trained form would be to be still constatiren. That it behaves really in such a way, over it I preserve at present hardly still another doubt, although I neither the Originalexemplar of the H. pentodon nor late in Cuming's collection bezeiehneten in such a way compare can. Indeed the smallest of my copies, with 5 turns, is the at that time under my eyes made, very faithful illustration of the Hel. pentodon in the new expenditure of the Chemnitz' work (Taf. 100. Fig. 32-34) so similarly that one could consider it identical nearly. The trochusartige building, the sharp keel, the 4eckige delta are completely alike, the two denticles on the muzzle wall, the two on the edge of basal and the Colnmellarzaehnchen are available, however weaker in the same position, but the navel is considerably closer than during that illustration. - a 2tes recent copy (of 7 turns) is gekielt likewise still sharp, with close navel and 4eckiger delta, lets however except the Columellarleistchen no CallusbilduIig more notice." (Pfeiffer, 1867:129 130.) Malakoz. Bl. 1867. V. June."

Even if with this species the morphology is also so variable, like the Cuban P.maritima and sagraiana for example, then nevertheless the specific relatedness of the different individuals is proved by the same perfect development of the convex, narrowed spire, and by the quite constant formation of the thickened, connected and outward struck aperture seam.

Some young individuals of this species are of large interest in relation on the first documented by E. v. Martens (Malak. Bl,1859. p.209) internal dental ridges in the first turns. An observation which lead him on the highly probable assumption, that Helix pentodon Mke. was likewise a juvenile Pupa, whose developed form would still have to be verified. I hardly have any doubts on that, although I can compare neither the original individual of H.pentodon nor the so described ones in Cuming's collection.

Indeed the smallest of my individuals with 5 whorls shows so many similarities with the illustration of H.pentodon in the new edition of the "Chemnitz'sches Werk" (Plate 100, Fig. 32-34), that they could be considered the same. The trochus-like morphology, the sharp keel, the foursquared orifice are completely alike, the two denticles on the orifice wall, the two on basal rim and the Columellar denticles are postioned alike, yet weaker, but the umbo is considerably tighter than theone in the illustration. A second juvenile individual (with 7 coils) is as well sharp keeled, with a narrow umbo and four squared aperture, but has no callus formation except from the columellar ridge.
