Original Description

"Cerion (Strophiops) barbouri sp. nov.

(Plate I, figure 5)

            Description.—Shell cylindric, robust, subperforate, smooth to ribbed. Color generally porcelain-white (a single light gray mottled specimen), interior of aperture white or reddish brown. Whorls 10 to 10 ¼, slightly convex, first 2 ½ translucent, remainder opaque. Last three whorls somewhat parallel-sided; early seven smoothly conic. Spire acute, produced at an angle varying from 67° to 74°. Aperture ovate. Mid-parietal tooth and columellar lamella well developed. Lip reflexed and well thickened. Sutures well indented. Sculpture on smooth forms consisting of numerous, rather fine growth lines. Ribbed forms have the ribs fairly regular, the spaces between the ribs a little wider than the ribs themselves. Ribs on the body whorl vary from 19 to 24.

            Holotype, Mus. Comp. Zoöl., no. 101,159, and paratypes, no. 101,160, south coast of Mariguana Island, Bahamas, Barbour, Fairchild and Greenway, collectors (February, 1933).

            This form differs from mariguanense in being shorter and proportionately wider, and in lacking entirely the reddish brown color."
