The Department of the Interior (DOI), Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM, formerly the Minerals Management Service, MMS) has contracted with the National Museum of Natural History’s (NMNH), Department of Invertebrate Zoology (IZ) since 1979, to provide professional collection management services for the long-term curation of its collection of marine invertebrate specimens taken during the environmental baseline surveys of various oil and gas lease sites on the US East, West, and Gulf Coasts. These studies, sampled existing biological communities along the continental shelf to document their composition and to help predict the potential impacts of future oil/gas explorations. BOEM and NMNH both appreciated the potential research value of these collections and collaborated on the creation of a project that would help ensure these invaluable collections would be cared for and made accessible for future research. More than 220,000 specimen lots have been curated into the Invertebrate Zoology collection, and these BOEM specimens represent almost 20% of the invertebrate collection records in our on-line catalog database.

In celebration of the 30 year collaboration between IZ and BOEM, IZ hosted a BOEM Environmental Sciences Branch staff site visit and prepared a series of downloadable posters: History of BOEM and NMNH-IZ Collaboration {[full size - 1.6 MB] [letter size - 0.1 MB]}, Importance of Archived Programmatic Collections {[full size - 3.7 MB] [letter size - 0.2 MB]}, Map of BOEM Collection Sites {[full size - 10.8 MB] [letter size - 0.3 MB]}. IZ staff also presented a lecture [The BOEM/IZ Partnership – 30 Years and Counting, Federal Programmatic Collections in the National Museum of Natural History] at the Department of Interior Museum. The IZ lecture is available in 3 file formats: recorded audio {20.5 MB - ppsx}, transcribed text {12.9 MB - pptx}, transcribed text {4.5 MB - pdf}. At the DOI Museum, BOEM Environmental Services Branch Oceanographer, Greg Boland also presented on the techniques, difficulties, and expense associated with oceanographic environmental baseline surveys. The BOEM lecture is available as transcribed text {9.3 MB - ppt} and portable document format {1.4 MB - pdf}.
