USAP History and Current Activities
The National Museum of National History has been collaborating with the National Science Foundation on Antarctic science since 1963. Click here for a history of this partnership.
Ongoing research in the USAP collection is conducted by NMNH staff as well as USAP-sponsored visiting scientists. Since the program began in April 2008, four visiting scientists have been sponsored, and 1056 specimens have been identified.
In addition to curating and cataloguing newly identified material, USAP staff also care for all other incoming Antarctic material and photograph representative specimens of each species in the collection, and gather from the Smithsonian libraries descriptive and bibliographic content for this site.
